Ran (Laurence)
[main character in: Spike
Before]
[mention in: Hunter and
Spike]
name: Laurence (Ran is the name he goes by as a wolf)
age: Mid to late 20s
race: Werewolf (turned after living most of his life as a human)
height: 1.70m (5'6″ ft)
Appearance:
⋆ Lean and somewhat slight compared to other werewolves, reflecting
both his human upbringing and his lack of traditional werewolf dominance.
⋆ Light hair, kept relatively short but practical.
⋆ Soft brown eyes.
⋆ Ran prefers practical, simple clothing that reflects his desire to maintain a sense of
self and masculinity. However, Spike often forces him into more humiliating or sexually suggestive outfits.
Abilities:
Unlike many werewolves, Ran’s regenerative abilities are slower, making him more vulnerable in fights or dangerous situations. While most werewolves can heal quickly from injuries, Ran’s healing takes longer, putting him at a disadvantage compared to stronger wolves.
While not particularly strong compared to other wolves, Ran is gifted with exceptional speed and endurance. He can outpace most wolves in a sprint and has an ability to keep going long after others would tire. This makes him an effective scout or messenger, though he dislikes being thrust into dangerous situations.
Like all werewolves, Ran has heightened senses, but his sharp sense of smell and hearing often make him more sensitive to his environment, adding to his discomfort in high-stress, noisy situations. He’s particularly attuned to emotions, often sensing tension or conflict before others realize it.
Personality:
Ran is introspective and quiet, often keeping his emotions to himself. He’s thoughtful,
empathetic, and highly sensitive to the emotions of others, which makes him an easy target for manipulation.
However, he also harbors a deep inner strength that emerges when he’s pushed too far. He’s torn between his
need for freedom and his loyalty to those he cares about, often sacrificing his own needs to keep the peace.
He wants to be seen as an equal but struggles to assert himself, especially in his relationship with
Spike.
Rut Specifics:
Ran’s rut is unusually manageable compared to other wolves. He doesn’t experience the overwhelming need that many of his kind go through, and he’s able to handle his rut periods through masturbation. Spike, however, refuses to engage with him during these times, as Ran’s rut intensifies his refusal to submit. Ran feels deeply conflicted and humiliated during these periods, knowing that Spike isn’t interested in meeting his needs in that way.
Backstory:
1. During the War
Ran, born Laurence, was raised and spent most of his life as a human before being turned into a werewolf just a few years before the end of the war. His upbringing shaped his values—equality, independence, and mutual respect—which are in direct conflict with the werewolf pack dynamics, especially by Hunt standards. His transformation and sudden introduction to pack life left him disoriented and struggling to find his place. He served as a scout for his pack, using his speed and endurance to carry messages and gather information, but always felt out of place among the wolves.
During this time, Ran met Spike, an alpha wolf from an opposing side. Spike violently claimed him during his rut. When Ran’s pack abandoned him, leaving him wounded and alone, Spike found him and nursed him back to health. Though Spike claimed Ran as his mate without his consent, there was a time when they grew close, and Ran began to believe in their bond. Spike protected Ran in the brutal, violent world of the war, and for a while, Ran saw their relationship as a source of safety and comfort.
2. After the war [Spike Before]
When the war ended, Ran hoped for a fresh start. He and Spike settled into life in the city, away from the violence of the packs, but their relationship began to deteriorate. Spike, used to dominance and control, struggled to treat Ran as an equal, and the bond they had forged during the war became strained. Spike’s possessiveness and need for control turned their relationship into a toxic cycle of manipulation, with Ran feeling increasingly trapped and diminished.
Ran found an escape through a job at a diner, trying to carve out a space for himself away from Spike’s influence. He built a separate life in the city, one where he could feel more human, more like himself, but Spike’s constant need for attention and dominance continued to erode their relationship. Despite this, Ran felt conflicted—torn between his loyalty to Spike and his growing desire for independence.
